18th August 2010 Der Metz is one of the very rare places for enjoying German "Cuisine" in Auckland. It offers traditional German dishes like Schnitzel and Spatzle and a great variety of German beers, too.
As being German I can assure that the offered food is quite authentic and the beer is even served in the appropriate glasses (there are different glasses depending on the type of beer). A further plus is the great size of the servings and the reasonable price. On the contrary it can be very busy and you may have to wait a bit until the food is served.
In overall Der Metz is recommendable - especially when you are really hungry!
This German restaurant in Auckland, is a gem. We offer authentic German food which is really hearty and tasty. There(TM)s a great range of German beers and wines and real German waitresses!
14th March 2012 Even though I had made a booking well in advance and requested window seating we were put at a table by the toilet door! There were only 4 other patrons in the restaurant so I queried this but the staff were totally inflexable. The "authentic German cooking" was micro-waved and out of a can- pork sausages with sauerkraut and the mashed potato was reconstituted from a packet. All in all totally tastless. The final insult was to be billed for a G+T as 2 separate billings. One price for the gin and another for the tonic. It would have to be the worst meal we have ever eaten and I will NEVER go back!

18th October 2011 NOT a good place anymore. It WAS excellent with great food a good service. Food is now TASTELESS still big size plates but really bad chef/kitchen. Used to go all the time, but same as my friends we don't enjoy the food there anymore. SAD as used to be one of the best in Auckland.

23rd June 2010 Der Metz is a meat eaters dream come true. The food portions are large (esp the Pork Hock & schnitzels) and the beer is superb (also mainly comes in large servings...the way beer should). Everything is very reasonably priced and is far better value than the majority of Auckland Eating and drinking establishments. The service is okay and could definitely be better, but the pros certainly far outweight the cons at Der Metz. Make sure you book well in advance, as they are always busy on Saturday nights.
