Had a great time here - the food was very nice and the service was top notch. Best fish and chips i've had in ages! Will definitely be coming back next summer.

We came here after a recommendation to try the fish and chips if we are ever out that way and the fact that new owners have taken over. Was a very good experience with friendly staff and good food. Amazing location near the beach, would come again!

The department of labour should send someone in to investigate the manner in which the owners are treating their staff. Employees have rights and should not be expected to put up with the public display of abuse which is humiliating and no doubt stressful for all - including the patrons. THE BEST WAY IS TO VOTE WITH YOUR FEET - DO NOT PAY GOOD, HARD EARNED, MONEY TO EXPERIENCE HORRENDOUS SERVICE IN THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!!

The bad news about this place has always been the owners. They scare local residents and visitors alike. The previous reviews are just some of dozens. Shouting and arguing with staff and patrons is commonplace. You just stop patronising the place. The good news is there are new owners and hopefully they will bring improved service and food and even a mildly civilised attitude would be a 100% improvement on the old owners. Little worrying is the old owners appear to still be there as advisers to the newcomers. Hopefully they will read our reviews and get the picture and make their own mark, improving on the appalling behaviour, service and very ordinary food available previously. Sand Dunz is in a great position handy to the beach and hopefully will become a place to want to be when visiting Muriwai. Good luck to the new owners.

This cafe needs some new owners! Rude and arrogant and yelling and swearing at staff for all to hear, there is no way I would want to work there. Food is fine, my family and I were in there on a busy Saturday and we all ordered the special which was lovely but it's a shame the service is so poor after hearing the owner shout and swear at staff. This is a real shame as the place has great potential, they are clearly too stupid to realise this. I'm suprised they manage to keep any staff.

Feel justified now in even bothering to review,,having read the above. Keep on driving. Our experience was not a good one. The restaurant was not busy…at Sunday lunchtime(admittedly should have been a sign!)..but we were hungry. Welcome was non-existent..food was pricey..$16 for soup. Food took 20 minutues to arrive and there were only five other tables occupied. That and the “stack”(big toastie) I ordered was cold(manager said it was meant to be(cold toast!?)..then rolled his eyes as I asked for it to be heated up…with took another 5 minutes. A thoroughly disappointing experience in both service and food..although the cafe itself is really nice with a warming gas fire and sofa. Sounds like some new staff and attitude is all that is required.

This place is always a let down. Last week they charged an extra drink and fried food to my order (an extra $7), which I did not ask for or receive. The manager was rude when refunding me, and wasn't courteous enough to apologise for the mistake. The BLT is nothing more than supermarket bread with cheap processed bacon and it tasted like rubbish. A year ago we took visiting family from Australia there. One of our party asked for no sour cream on his wedges (due to an intolerance), which they did not follow. After asking it to be remade, a man who we suspect was the owner in the kitchen slammed the wedges down on the counter and shouted 'this is for the whinger'. Not a good impression for tourists. Too bad there are no other cafes in the area.

I was unhappy with the way the obnoxious owner treated one of my overseas guest. The other guests and I were lost for words and dumbfounded. Since I decided it was my treat, an earlier order for take-out food by one friend could not be changed. He decided perhaps he would take my offer and have some fries. While we were all seated, this extremely impolite owner just came and snatched the packed food and told my overseas friend that he could get it from him on his way out. Yet, I have to patronize this joint to the tune of $105.80! Food was JUST MEDIOCRE. When I tried to tell him he was being impolite he just brushed me off and said he could do whatever he liked. Such KIWI hospitaliy! This guy is a crying shame and a disservice to all KIWIS.
