11th March 2009 My continuing search for good coffee in Napier found me at Devine. At last I can report that the coffee was very very good. Havana coffee!
There are gluten free options here and good seating. The outdoor seats are in a bit of a wind tunnel though and the tables are small with only enough room for one setting which makes four at a table out in the sun very tricky to negotiate. Bigger square tables anyone? Some occasions have seen me wrestling in the wind tunnel as salt and pepper shakers, serviettes, knives and forks went flying.
What lets down Devine is the 'service'. Hospitality Association really need to look at these folks. Once waited 45 minutes in an empty cafe for a panini. The staff on that day spoke no English at all and appeared to have been hired on looks alone. If you want your food in a hurry, don't order from the cabinet, order from the uncovered plates of cake on the counter (if you dare). The 'iced' coffee is not recommended- not very iced (the milk was warm) and no coffee as far as I could tell.
There is one guy there whose sole job appears to be to fill glasses with water... all good in the summer heat but when there are no (ahem) facilities in this cafe, your long wait may be an excruciating one.
Not a place for groups and for those in a hurry, not an option.
