Pene Campbell
Ngati Maniapoto,Waikato, Ngati Tuwharetoa
Pene has 28 years experience in Maori Art, design and carving.
He first started his journey in traditional Maori art through carving.
In 1983 he attended Waipa Kokiri Art Centre carving under the tutorlege of Dr Paki Harrison for five years. The projects he was involved included Otawhao of Tawhio school marae based in Te Awamutu, Maniaro marae in Mokau, Purekereke marae in Porongia and other marae based projects in Kawhia and Rotorua.
First and foremost Pene was taught that the process of hygiene and cleanliness surrounding tamoko procedures was of utmost importance.
From there on he learnt all about skin care and manipulation, guns, inks, needles and aftercare processes.
Penes treatment towards tamoko resides in his ability to
communicate with people; design and formulate artwork and to apply in onto the skin. His specialty is in traditional and contemporary Maori designs in black and grey with
shading.
