OK, First of all I thought Alvarados was a really bad experience when it was upstairs, in town, but since the move to Stevens Street location, I must say that the quality and service has improved exponentially. When I went to the new Alvarados, there were Spanish speaking people running things and that's a good sign for a Mexican restaurant. The food has improved vastly from the old Alvarados that served up cold Countdown corn chips and canned stewed tomatoes passed off as Picante. The new Alvarados has authentic South-of-the-Border cuisine that isn't bad at all. Matter of fact, the restaurant has a nice selection of basic foods you'd expect, and a good compliment of habernero-based hot sauce for those needing a bit more kick in their chimichanga, with plenty of wonderful Mexican beer to wash it down with. The only thing I miss are the obligatory handmade corn chips and salsa that are normally complimentary with most Mexican or Tex-Mex establishments, but I'll just get over it because the food is very characteristically Mexican. Mexican food is all about fresh. The only thing missing was the Mariachi Band. I have put Alvarados on my "favourites" list, and I think you should too, if you like real Mexican food (who doesn't???)!
