Matahui Road School is a 'multiple intelligences' school, where children are engaged in their learning and are given the opportunity to use their individual strengths to develop areas of need. Classroom programmes based on the multiple intelligences (theory by Howard Gardner) result in improved academic outcomes and improved motivation.
Matahui Road School also embraces Art Costa's Habits of the Mind; helping students to develop positive learning behaviours (identified as being used by sucessful people of all walks of life) so they become valuable 'habits' in our students lives, so that they are better equipped to be successful life-long learners, and to help them cope in a rapidly changing world.
Values education is also integrated into classroom programmes.
Educating students outside the classroom is seen as a vital and stimulating part of our school programme. Children are introduced to the challenges and dangers of the environment and the skills for coping with them, providing them with the opportunity to develop further strengths and abilities and greater self confidence. The programme includes bush and water safety and survival skills, first aid, abseiling, surf skills, map and compass skills, sailing, rowing, canoeing, and campfire cooking.
