Dave Schafer has been in the industry for over 30 years - and began serving an instruments apprenticeship within the Naval dockyard in Devonport.

So whats a typical job? There's no real pattern, it seems, but sun damage is common. "many compasses are from boats up in the tropic's, they have been left uncovered for long periods, and the acrylic or Perspex dome has crazed or discoloured which caused the fluid to leak out. Repairing it requires a new dome, refilling and re-swinging - and selling the owner a sun-cover."

More extensive repairs involve the actual mechanical components of the compass. Cleaning, rebuilding, replacing jewels, pivots, cards, glasses, and even brazing. And the older the compass, the more difficult it is to find replacement parts, If I cant repair it no one can !!!!
