9th October 2007 New Zealand is in many ways stuck in 1979, particularly so when it comes to after hours activities. Disrupted sleep at 3am leaves the Aucklander with nothing to see or to do, for at least another six hours. In these situations it is best not to stay indoors but to explore the magazine racks at the local 24 hour Foodtown, which in my case is a 3 minute drive away. This one in Takapuna is particularly nice, with good security, excellent heating, a wonderful range of wines, foreign and organic foods, genuinely friendly staff, excellent specials and probably the best range of coffees and specialty baked goods in NZ. At 3am on a cold, moonless, sleepless night, there is comfort and distraction to be found at Foodtown Takapuna, but don't go in your pyjamas.
