18th August 2012 This is a great bakery, please ignore the other review above. I have been a regular customer for many years and have always found the food to be excellent. They serve traditional kiwi bakery food & should be judged accordingly. The brown on the inside of the described above was chocolate, and was my friends and my favourite version until this other reviewer ruined it for all of us as because of this feedback they have reverted to the standard version. I have enjoyed their pies & other baked goods also. In my opinion The Port Rd bakery is the best bakery in Whangamata & they definitely do not deserve the harsh earlier review.

14th February 2012 It was my third time in Whangamata but my first and LAST at this bakery. I am not a fan of bakery food but when I do go to one I have an apple turnover or sometimes a lamington: safe choices. Or so I thought...
A friend had a meat pie and threw it away. He was kiwi, young, hungry and loves pies.
The apple turnover was hard and black underneath as if they keep reheating it everyday (and I think this one was 2 weeks old). The lamington tasted like a bad sponge cake and was light brown inside. I've had a few lamingtons before and they were all WHITE inside because of the coconut that i didn't taste in that one.
But that's not all, when we went back to complain, the manager (a lady) took a little while to come to us and laughed at us for complaining. She said that she never had any bad reviews, that we were the first one to ever complain. We then asked her if she had ever tasted the food they sell and she said no!! shocking!!
We left with her bad comments and her staff and her laughing at us. WOW!! I have studied and worked in hospitality for quite some time now but it is the first time I have someone act like that.
