John McGlashan College

John McGlashan College is an integrated New Zealand Boys School, Year 7-13, secondary school for boys. Approximately 20 international students are enrolled each year. The roll comprises approximately 380 dayboys from Dunedin city and its surrounds and 110 boarders, most of whom come from rural Otago and Southland.

The College, established first as a private school, is named after Dunedin's first lawyer, first session clerk of the Presbytery and the first provincial solicitor. John McGlashan was an important administrator who contributed significantly to the Scottish settlement of the city. In 1902, two of his daughters bequeathed their home for the purpose of establishing a boys' school. It opened in 1919.

John McGlashan wrote that he favoured a 'sound and liberal education' and today we continue to hold to this broad ideal. The College is committed to a comprehensive philosophy of education: it seeks to help every boy grow and develop - not just academically but morally, aesthetically, physically and socially.

We aim for intellectual excellence. By means of a well structured academic programme, we strive to instil the capacity for rigorous analysis, disciplined reflection and clear expression.

Above all, we want our students to become well educated men of character. We want them to learn to have the courage to stand, alone if necessary, for what they believe is right and to use their education and influence for the good of others. The aim is for boys to leave this College as men of integrity and conviction.
